ALLEN, David Oliver

ALLEN, David Oliver. Barre, MA 14.9.1799 — Lowell, MA 19.7.1863. Rev. U.S. Missionary in India. Son of Moses and Mahitable Allen, grew up in Princeton. After graduating from Amherst College 1823 studied at Andover Theological Seminary, ordained 1827. In 1827-53 worked in Bombay for American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. From 1844 editorial superintendent of American Mission Press in Bombay. Back in the U.S.A. in 1857-60 minister in Westford and Wenham, MA. Married Myra Wood (d. 1831).

Publications: India, Ancient and Modern. Geographical, Historical, Political, Social, and Religious, with a Particular Account of the State and Prospects of Christianity. 2nd ed. 12+618 p. Boston 1856.

– Participated in the translation, revision and publication of the Marāṭhī Bible.
