FABRICIUS, Pierre

FABRICIUS, Pierre (Peter F.). Berlin 23./30.4.1912 — 20.12.1988. French (of German origin) Indologist and South-East Asian Scholar. Son of a teacher of classical languages. Studies at Heidelberg (under  Zimmer), then at Hamburg (Schubring), In 1933 emigrated to France because of Nazis. Now further studies under Lévi, Foucher, Renou, et al., diplome 1935, then one year at S.O.A.S. in London. In WW II served in Legion étrangère 1939-45 in North Africa. Moved to Cambodia and in 1945-48 taught German at Lille, 1947 naturalised as French. In 1950-66 taught Greek and Latin in schools in Phnom Penh. In 1965-74 Professor at Phnom Penh University teaching Sanskrit. In 1974 returned to France, taught German in schools, retired 1977. Specialist of vyākaraṇa.

Publications: Mainly wrote on Khmer culture and folklore.
