GARTHWAITE, Liston

GARTHWAITE, James Grant Liston. 1833 — Glenelg, South Australia 21.12.1918. British Missionary and Teacher in India. Trained as teacher at Westminster College,London (B.A.). Worked for Basel Mission in Kerala, arrived at Bangalore 1853. From 1857 director of various schools in India. From 1868 Inspector of schools in Malabar and Canara. Retired 1888. Fellow of Madras University 1884. After retirement collaborated with missionaries to develop versions of Braille script for 13 Indian languages. Widowed he visited his relatives in South Australia in 1895 and 1898 and settled permanently there in 1900. Married 1859 Mary Lanauze (d. 1885).
