ENDLE, Sidney. Totnes, Devon 1840? — Dibrugarh ?.7.1907. Rev. British Missionary in India. Son of a vicar, educated at Totnes Grammar School and at St. Augustine’s College in Canterbury. First arrived at Tezpur in Assam in 1864 and worked 43 years as Anglican missionary and chaplain among Kachari Baras (Bodos). Ordained priest 1865. Worked under Hesselmyer and after his death in 1869 took charge of the Kachari Mission with headquarters at Tezpur. Married 1875 Sarah Ewbank Chambers (d. 1895). In his small grammar he included some Bara folktales and was thus the first to use a Bara language for writing. In his last book he gave good account of their religion.
