STEPHENSON, John. 1??? — 1???. British (?) Civilian (“Mr.”) in India. There are several contradictory accounts. Possibly he was that J.St. of Tyneside who went to India in 1829 with his wife Elizabeth Brumwell and remained 12 years in E.I.C.’s service before returning to the U.K. They had four children. This J.St. died in the 1850s. myheritage.com states that he was born around 1795 in Trichinopoly, married Elizabeth Gordon Brumwell (b. 1804) and had seven children (five sons and two daughters, born 1829-43, listed in geni.com), and rootweb.com has J.St. (Trichinopoly 1784 — Oldham, Lancashire 1844), connected with Brumwell, but another comment there suggests birth rather c. 1790.
