STOKES, Hudleston

STOKES, Hudleston (Huddleston). Doveridge, Derbyshire 24.8.1807 — Bath 13.3.1888. British Civil Servant in South India. Son of Vicar Henry Stokes of Doveridge and Marianne Marshall. Joined E.I.C.’s service 1826, worked mainly in Kurnool. From 1842 Assistant, then Collector and Magistrate in Guntur until 1852. He was actively supporting Christian mission. Married 1840 his cousin Sarah Ellen Stokes (1813–1895), children, also a son with an unnamed Indian woman

Publications: Nitinerivilakkam of Cumara Guru Para Timiran containing a hundred and two stanzas on moral subjects, with an English translation, vocabulary and notes. 11+15+112 p. Madras 1830 (in Tamil).
