STOKES, Hudleston

STOKES, Hudleston (Huddleston). Doveridge, Derbyshire 1807 — 1888?. British Civil Servant in South India. Son of Vicar Henry St. of Doveridge. Joined E.I.C.’s service 1826, worked mainly in Kurnool. From 1842 Assistant, then Collector and Magistrate in Guntur until 1852. He was actively supporting Christian mission.

Publications: Nitinerivilakkam of Cumara Guru Para Timiran containing a hundred and two stanzas on moral subjects, with an English translation, vocabulary and notes. 11+15+112 p. Madras 1830 (in Tamil).
