GILES, Peter. Strichen, Buchan dt., Aberdeenshire 20.10.1860 — Cambridge 17.9.1935. British Linguist and Classical Philologist. Reader in Cambridge. Son of Peter G., a factor, and Margret Eddie Brown. Educated at King’s College, from 1878 at Aberdeen University, from 1882 at Caius College, Cambridge. Studied classical and comparative linguistics and history. Student of John Peile, in 1886 further studies at Freiburg and 1887 at Leipzig under Brugmann. In 1887 Fellow, in 1890 moved to Emmanuel College. From 1887 classical tutor at Emmanuel, from 1891 University Reader in Comparative Philology and from 1911 Master of Emmanuel College, held all three offices until his death. In 1893 married with Elizabeth Mary Dunn, one son and four daughters.
