GREY, William George

GREY, William George. Wellington, New Zealand 12.10.1866 — 6.4.1953. British Colonial Officer in India. Son on Major William Robert Grey and Amy Hare. Joined the army in 1886, served in Natal, Straits Settlements and Gibraltar, in 1889 transferred to Indian army. From 1902 in political service, first as vice-consul in Bandar-Abbas, 1904-08 political agent in Maskat (Oman), from 1906 in Political Dept., Government of India. 1914-16 political agent in Kuwait, served also in Mysore, Calcutta and Beluchistan, 1916-20 consul general for Khorasan. Retired in 1921. Lieutenant-colonel. In 1929-40 Lecturer in Urdu at Caius College in Cambridge. Hon. M.A. 1931 Cambridge. Married 1909 Mary Evelyn Ainslie, one son.
