HAEBERLIN (Häberlen), Johannes. Tuttlingen, Württemberg 19.8.1808 — Hooghly near Calcutta 12.11.1849. German Missionary and Indologist, in India 1832-37 and 1839-49. Son of Joh. Konrad H., a shoemaker, and Regina Ruoff. Learned his father’s craft and worked as shoemaker from 1826, but was since childhood interested in missionary work and studied religious works (J. Böhme). From 1827 studies at Mission Seminary in Basel, from 1830 at Church Missionary Society’s (C.M.S.) seminary in London. Ordained as priest in London 18.12.1831. As a missionary of C.M.S. came to India in 1832, worked first at Krishnagar near Burdwan. In 1836 founded a seminary for catechets in Calcutta. In 1837 on furlough to Europe because of health problems. Transferred by C.M.S. to British and Foreign Bible Society came back to Bengal in 1839 as Agent for spreading the Bible. In 1845 he was sent to found new missionary stations in East Bengal. From 1947 Secretary, for a while also Treasurer of East Bengal Missionary Society in Dacca. In 1849 left ill for home, but died before he even reached Calcutta. He was a member of A.S.B. and collected Sanskrit manuscripts for Tübingen University. Married 1838 Charlotte Wilhelmine Köllner, three sons and one daughter.
