HANNAY, Simon Fraser. Inverness 12.11.1801 — Dibrugarh, Assam 30.1.1861. British (Scottish) Colonial Officer in India. Son of Henry H. (1766–1822) and Helen Fraser (1777–1815). From 1820 Ensign in Bengal Light Infantry. From 1836 served in Assam, in 1839-61 commander of the 1st Assam Light Infantry. Colonel. Pioneer of Assam tea industry. In 1835–36 explored the Irrawaddy. Married 1827 Margaret Campbell Graham (d. 1841) and 1844 Mary Florence Campbell, four sons and one daughter.

Publications: “Notes on Ancient Temples and other Remains in the vicinity of Suddyah, Upper Assam”, JASB 17:1, 1848, 459-472, 2 pl.; wrote for the JASB in the 1840s also on geology and ethnography.
