JOHAENTGEN, Franz

JOHAENTGEN (Johäntgen), Franz Georg. Bonn 13/15.4.1834 — Berlin 6.4.1899. German Indologist and Journalist. Son of Georg J. and Margaretha Probst. Roman Catholic. Educated at Catholic Gymnasium in Cologne and 1853-54 in Arensberg. In 1854-56 studies of Indology under Lassen at Bonn and from 1856 under Weber at Berlin. Ph.D. 1858 Berlin. In early 1860s further studies in Paris. From 1864 PD at Berlin, but turned more and more to publishing and politics. Gave up his Docentship in 1878 and retired “ins Privatleben”. In 1865-67 also taught Hindūstānī.

Publications: diss. Specimen syntaxeos linguae Sanscritae nempe particulae quaedam doctrinae de significatu formarum grammaticarum auctore Paninio. 44 p. B. 1858; habil.diss. Über das Gesetzbuch des Manu. Eine philosophisch-litteraturhistorischer Studie. 122 p. B. 1863.
