KNOROZOV, Jurij Valentinovič. Pivdenne near Harkiv, Ukraina 19.11.1922 — St.Petersburg 31.3.1999. Russian Linguist and Ethnographer. Born of Russian parents in Ukraina. From 1940 studied in Moscow, concentrating on Egyptology, but soon interrupted by war service in artillery. In 1945 continued his studies, now including also Arabic and Chinese. Soon also interested in Maya hieroglyphs and wrote his kand.diss. on them. He is best known of his Maya interpretation, but also studied Indus script.
