KOHL, Josef Friedrich

KOHL, Josef Friedrich. Katzengrün (now Kaceřov in Czech) 22.7.1908 — ?.1.1998. Austrian Indologist in Germany. Professor at Würzburg. Son of a Catholic estate steward from Bohemia, educated at German Gymnasium in Eger. In 1927-31 studies of biology, paleontology, physics and mathematics at German University of Prague, in 1931-33 Indology under Winternitz and O. Stein at the same, then under Kirfel and Losch at Bonn. Ph.D. 1937 Bonn. From 1940 PD at Bonn, from 1943 at Prague German University (until 1945?), from 1948 at Würzburg. From 1957 apl. Professor at Würzburg. Retired in 1973/74, but teaching until 1991.

JFK was a specialist of Jaina literature, who published rather little.
