POWELL, Eyre Burton. Brecknockshire, Wales 1818/19 — Streatham, London 10.11.1904. British Civil Servant in India. Son of the elder E. B. Powell (1795–1859) and Elizabeth Labeste, studied at Pembroke College, Cambridge (B.A. 1840, M.A. 1857). In 1848 (or 1840?) joined Madras Civil Service. Worked as teacher, finally Principal of Presidency College in Madras. In 1862-75 Director of Public Instruction for Madras Presidency, then retired. C.S.I. 1866. An eager lay astronomer. Married Annie Lucretia Hamilton (1830–1915), four sons and two daughters. Thus WikiTree. According to ancestry.com E. B. Powell (1819–1904), born in Closhavoy, county Limerick, married Elizabeth Hamilton Matilda Jorions Langley (1821-1874), their son was born in Madras 1847. The same in thepeerage.com adding that they were married in 1846 and had five sons and two daughters. Perhaps he was twice married, first with Elizabeth (and all children with her) and as widower with Annie.
