MCCULLOCH, William (elder)

MCCULLOCH, William. Edinburgh 28.2.1816 — Shillong 4.4.1885. British Colonial Officer in India. Son of John Ramsay McC., a political economist, and his wife Isabella, educated at Edinburgh High School and Addiscombe. Joined the army 1834 and went to Calcutta in 1835. Served in Native Infantry in various parts of North India, from 1840 Assistant to Political Agent in Manipur, in 1845-63 and 1864-67 himself Political Agent there. Retired as Lieutenant-Colonel from the army in 1867, but remained in India. Said to have married princess Ningthoujam Thotpi of Thanga principality in eastern Manipur.

Publications: An Account of the Valley of Munnipore and the Hill Tribes: with a comparative vocabulary of the Munnipore and other languages. Calcutta 1859.
