MICHAELIS, Walther

MICHAELIS, Walther Hugo. 1873 — 1967. German Student of Indology or of IE Linguistics. Apparently among the last students of Weber. Ph.D. 1898 Berlin. One Dr. W. Michaelis (2.2.1873–27.3.1967) was in 1931-35 Director of Francke Foundation in Halle and member of the NSDAP.

I have included him as Janert lists his work under Indian religion, but from Internet references it rather seems to belong to classical philology. With libraries closed because of Covid I cannot get the dissertation itself for checking (March 2021). Summer 2024 brought more light. There is a full account of his life until 1933 in digital.francke-halle.de/mod6a/content/pageview/340990 (with photo). He was indeed a Berlin Doctor of 1898 and then a Latin teacher, his studies comprised of classics, history and archaeology, but not of Indology or linguistics. Perhaps Janert was mistaken including him.

In 2026 I finally checked the diss. in babelhathitrust.org (which also gave the second name) and saw that it is just on classical religion without anything Indian. There is no life of the author in it.

Publications: Diss. De origine indicis deorum cognominum. 90 p. B. 1898.
