JAMESON, Michael Hamilton. London 15.10.1924 — Stanford 18.8.2004. U.S. Classical Scholar. Born in London where his parents, Raymond D. Jameson and Rose Perel. were visiting from Peking, where his father was Professor of Western Literature. Grew up in Peking and London. A.B. 1942 University of Chicago in Greek. In 1943-46 Japanese translator in U.S. Navy. Ph.D. 1949 University of Chicago. Further studies of archaeology in Athens and Social Anthropology at Oxford. In 1954-76 Professor at University of Pennsylvania, then at Stanford University (1997), finally emeritus. Died of cancer. In 1946 married Virginia Broyles, four sons. He was interested in Greek religion, epigraphy and archaeology.
