KUIPER, Franciscus Bernardus Jacobus. the Hague 7.7.1907 — Zeist, prov. Utrecht 14.11.2003. Dutch Indologist, Munda and Indo-Iranian Scholar. Professor in Leiden. Son of the elder F. B. J. Kuiper (1878–1973), a schoolteacher, and Anna Maria van Dijk. After school in the Hague studied classical and IE philology, at Leiden, and Sanskrit at Utrecht (Caland). M.A. 1928 in classics and 1929 in Indology. Ph.D. 1934 Leiden. In 1934-39 taught classical languages at Lyceum der Carpentier Alting-Stichting in Batavia (Jakarta). From 1939 Vogel’s successor as Professor of Indology at Leiden. Beside Sanskrit also taught Tamil, Old Iranian and IE linguistics. Emeritus 1972 (succeeded by Heesterman). Married 1934 Eduarda Johanna de Jong (1913–1994, divorce 1974), then Hanna Nieboer (1913–2003), survived by wife (died soon), three sons and a daughter.
Kuiper was a many-sided linguist, with interests ranging from IE (an early laryngalist) and Veda to Sanskrit drama, Prākrit, non-Aryan substrate in OIA, Dravidian and Muṇḍa, also Indian and Iranian mythology and the mythological origin of Indian drama. Among other things he was a pioneer of comparative Muṇḍa linguistics. Among his many students were R. S. P. Beekes and J. W. de Jong. With de Jong he founded and edited the IIJ.
