FRERE, Mary Eliza Isabella. Bitton, Gloucestershire 11.8.1845 — St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex 26.3.1911. British Author. Daughter of —> Bartle Frere (1815–1884) and Catherine Arthur. Educated at home in Wimbledon. In the age of 18 joined her father in Bombay 1863, participated in his official travels and began collecting folklore, supported in this by her father who also edted the collection. In 1877-80 with her father in South Africa. Later on travelled in Europe and Egypt, in 1906-08 in Palestine. Living in Cambridge, studied Hebrew. In last years often ill. Unmarried.
Publications: Old Deccan Days; or, Hindoo Fairy Legends, Current in Southern India. Collected From Oral Tradition. 1868 (with introduction by her father and illustrations by her sister Catherine), and several editions, translated in German, Hungarian, Danish, Marathi, Hindi and Gujarati.
