RÉVILLE, Albert. Dieppe 3/4.11.1826 — Paris 25.10.1906. French Theologian and Scholar of Religion, a Protestant Priest. Professor in Paris. Son of Rev. Jean Réville (1793–1861) and Madeleine Salmon. Educated in Dieppe, studies at Geneva and Strasbourg. Bachelier en théol. 1848 Strasbourg, ordained priest 1849. Worked long time as the Minister of Église Wallonne in Rotterdam (1851-73). He was literarily active and became known as liberal protestant theologian. Years 1873-80 in Dieppe. From 1880 Professor of History of Religion (“professoire d’histoire des dogmes”) at Collège de France. As theologian he was known as liberal (with links to Tübingen school and E. Renan). Also taught Indian religion (e.g. in 1882). Married 1851 Doris Louise Dimier de Siebolt (1828–1914, for sons and two daughters. His successor at Collège de France was his son, the theologian Jean Réville (1854–1908).
Publications: Much on theology and Christian religion, also on comparative religion and on Celtic, German, Greek, Egyptian and Semitic religions; a monograph on Central and South American religions.
