RÉVILLE, Albert. Dieppe 3/4.11.1826 — Paris 25.10.1906. French Theologian and Scholar of Religion, a Protestant Priest. Professor in Paris. Son of the Rev. Jean R. (1793–1861). Bachelier en théol. 1848 Strasbourg, ordained priest 1849. Worked long time as the Minister of Église Wallonne in Rotterdam. Literarily active, became known as liberal protestant theologian. From 1880 (or 1886?) Professor of History of Religion (“professoire d’histoire des dogmes”) at Collège de France. Also taught Indian religion (e.g. in 1882). His son and successor at Collège de France was the theologian Jean R. (1854–1908).
Publications: much on theology and Christian religion, also on comparative religion; a monograph on Central and South American religions.
