WEST, Arthur Anderson. London 23.8.1827 — Theydon Bois, Essex 1913. British Engineer in India. Son of William West and Margaret Anderson, younger brother of —> E. W. West (1824–1905), whom he assisted in his epigraphical studies. Educated at King’s College. Went to India in 1847. Engineer, like his brother involved in building railways. Left India 1873, spent some time in Canada and then lived about 30 years in Theydon Bois. Married 1857 Ellen Carter Newton (1836–1895), five daughters and four sons.
Publications: With E. W. West edited the inscriptions of Kanheri (JBRAS 6, 1861, 1-14) and Nasik (JBRAS 7, 1862, 37-52).
Sources: The peerage.com claims that E.W. West had no younger brothers, but the opposite is stated by J. Burgess (introduction to The Cave Temples of India) who knew them both; also searcharchives.bl.uk/primo_library/libweb/action/dlDisplay.do?docId=IAMS032-002276671&fn=permalink&vid=IAMS_VU2 has them as brothers and gives the second name in full. With this second name a short obituary (10 lines) was found in www.icevirtuallibrary.com/doi/pdf/10.1680/imotp.1913.17526 and details of marriage in WikiTree.
