REDARD, Georges. Neuchâtel 4.4.1922 — Kirchlindach 24.1.2005. Swiss IE and Iranian
Scholar. Professor in Neuchâtel and Bern. Son of post official Arnold Ernest Redard and Mathilde Kröpfli. Studies at Neuchâtel: 1940 baccalauréat ès lettres (with Hebrew), 1943 licensié ès langues classiques (with Russian, Lithuanian, Persian and Sanskrit); then at Bern (lic. 1945 in comparative grammar, Sanskrit and Russian) and in 1945-48 Paris (Benveniste); 1951-52 further studies in Teheran. Dr. ès lettres 1949 Neuchâtel (under Niedermann). Taught at University of Neuchâtel from 1948, from 1951 as ao. Professor and in 1954-76 as ord. “de linguistique générale et grammaire comparée”, from 1976 Hon. Professor. From 1954 also ao. Professor at Bern (succeeding Debrunner) and in 1958-87 ord. of IE Linguistics and classical languages. Rector of the university in 1971-72. Emeritus 1988. In 1967-69 visiting Professor at Lausanne and in 1986-?? Associate Professor at Collège de France in Paris. In 1994 living in Kirchlindach near Bern. Hon. dr. Geneva 1886. Three times married: 1943 Marie Louise de Tribolet-Hardy, 1961 Françoise Louise Gianoli, and 1974 Madeleine Saxer.
Redard is known as IE, Greek and Iranian scholar. He combined the methods of French and German schools. Among his special interests is dialectology (of Swiss French and Farsi).
