WHITLEY, Jabez Cornelius. London 20.1.1837 — Darjeeling 13/18.10.1904. Right Rev. British Missionary in India. Son of Rev. E.Wh., “educated at the Mercer’s School, Holborn, and Queen’s College, Cambridge, ordained in 1860. Went to India in 1862 as a Missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, worked at Delhi, 1862–9, at Ranchi in Chota Nagpur with a colony of Native Christians of the Church of England, 1869-90. Consecrated, in 1890, Bishop of Chota Nagpur, his district remaining part of the Calcutta diocese, the new Bishop promising canonical obedience to the Metropolitan of Calcutta.”
