SACHAU, Eduard. Neumünster/Holstein 20.7.1845 — Berlin 17.9.1930. German Oriental (Arabic) Scholar. Professor in Berlin. Son of Claus Jacob S. Studies of Oriental, especially Semitic philology at Kiel and Leipzig (Fleischer). Ph.D. 1867 Halle. Catalogued the Persian manuscripts at Bodleian Library in 1869. From 1869 ao. and 1872 ord. Professor at Vienna, from 1876 Professor of Orientalistik at Berlin, from 1887 also Director of Seminar für orientalische Sprachen. In 1879-80 travelled in Syria and Mesopotamia, in 1897-98 again in Mesopotamia. Geh. Oberregierungsrat 1906. Hon. D.Litt. 1902 Oxford.

Sachau was a Semitic scholar also interested in Iran and in India. He is remembered as the famous specialist of Al-Bīrūnī. Also important in Aramaic studies.
