SALDANHA, Antonio de

SALDANHA, Antonio de. Mazagão (El Jadida in Morocco) 1598 — Rachol 15.12.1663. S.J. Portuguese Missionary in India. Son of Portuguese father and Italian mother. Came to Goa as soldier, but soon took religion and joined S.J. in 1615. Trained in Salsette Mission he became Rector of St. Ignatius Seminary in Rachol. Compiled there an unpublished Konkani dictionary.

Publications: A book on St.Anthony of Padua, written in Konkani: Acharyevanta bhagta Sancto Antonichea punneana zim maha abisttanchim apuruã. 413 p. Rachol 1655, new ed. by A. K. Priolkar. 1963; another Konkani religious book, on The fruits of the Tree of Life, remained as manuscript.
