STEPHENSON, John (elder)

STEPHENSON, John. 1??? — 1???. British (?) Civilian (“Mr.”) in India. Possibly he was that J.St. of Tyneside who went to India in 1829 with his wife Elizabeth Brummell and remained 12 years in E.I.C.’s service before returning to the U.K. They had four children. This J.St. died in the 1850s. myheritage.com states that he was born around 1795 in Trichinopoly.

Publications: “Excursions to the Ruins and Site of an Ancient City near Bakhra, 13 cos north of Patna, and six north from Singhea”, JASB 4, 1835, 128-138; four scientific articles in JASB in the 1830s.
