MOLZ, Marcellinus

MOLZ, Marcellinus (born Otto Molz). Kappel, Freiburg i. Br. 7.8.1873 — St.Nazianz near Milwaukee, Wisconsin 4.10.1961. S.D.S. Father. German Catholic Missionary in India. Son of Johann Molz, a farmer and local Mayor, and Maria Salenbacher. In 1885 both parents died and he decided to take religious career. After education in Sasbach near Baden-Baden he became Salvatorian novice in 1890. Studied theology at Gregoriana in Rome in order to become missionary. Ordained priest 1895. From 1895 worked in Assam (Bondashill in Badarpur-Cachar). In 1908 the first Catholic missionary to visit Nagaland and his article was the first published account of Ao Nagas. In 1910-13 in Europe on vacation. As German he was interned in 1915 and in 1916 sent via Netherlands to Germany. Now served as army chaplain. After war Germans were not allowed to return to Assam and Molz was sent to the U.S.A. He lived first in Maryland and worked in behalf of China mission, from 1931 in Oregon and finally in Wisconsin, working as priest. He was not happy in U.S.A., longing for his work in Assam.
