NICHOLL, George Frederick. Tipton, Staffordshire 5.11.1832 — 28.7.1913. British Semitic Scholar also interested in Indology. Son of John Nicholls (1811–1893, his sons dropped the final s) Studies at Balliol College, Oxford, M.A. 1878, Hon. Fellow 1888. As a schoolteacher in London he taught Sanskrit to Bendall in the beginning of the 1870s. He was (the last) Lord Almoner’s Professor of Arabic at Oxford in 1878–1909, and from 1879 also (honorary) Professor of Sanskrit and Persian at King’s College, London. As both these positions are poorly paid, he became in 1880 Lecturer in Oriental Languages at Oxford. Retired 1909 because of ill-health and lived in Felixstowe, Suffolk. Married.
