PETERS, John Punnett. New York City 16.12.1852 — New York City10.11.1921. U.S. Oriental Scholar. Son of Rev. Thomas McClure Peters and Alice Clarissa Richmond, as child ofetn ill. After Hopkins School studies at Yale (B.A. 1873). Ph.D. 1876 Yale. Ordined priest 1877. Further studies at Berlin (1879-81) and Leipzig (1882-83). Professor of Old Testament languages and literature at Protestant Episcopal Divinity School in Philadelphia in 1884–91 and professor of Hebrew at University of Pennsylvania in 1885–93. In 1888-95 excavations at Nippur. In 1893-1919 Rector of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan, then retired. Married 1881 Gabriella Brooke Forman, seven children.
