LANE-POOLE, Stanley Edward. London 18.17.1854 — London 29.12.1931. British Historian, Archaeologist and Oriental (Arabic) Scholar. Son of Edward Stanley Poole (1830–1867, also an Arabic scholar) and Roberta Reddelien (1820–1866), through his paternal grandmother grand-nephew of Edward William Lane (1801–1876, famous Arabist). After parents’ early death raised by his grandmother and her brother E. W. Lane. Educated by private tutors, studies at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. M.A. Oxford and Dublin. In 1874-92 worked at Coin Department, British Museum. In 1883 visited Egypt and 1886 Russia on behalf of the Museum, in 1890 in Australia. In 1895-97 employed by Egyptian Government on archaeological research in Cairo. In 1898-1904 Professor of Arabic at Trinity College in Dublin. After 1904 concentrated on literary work without teaching any longer. Married 1879 Charlotte Bell Wilson (d. 1905), one daughter, three sons.
