BURY, John Bagnell. Clontibret, co. Monaghan 16.10.1861 — Rome 1.6.1927. British (Irish) Classical Scholar and Historian. Professor in Cambridge. Son of Rev. E. J. Bury, Anglican canon of Clogher. Educated in Londonderry, studies at Trinity College in Dublin. In 1893-1902 Professor of Modern History at Trinity College, from 1898 also Regius Professor of Greek. From 1902 Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge and Fellow of King’s College. Hon. Litt.D. Oxford, Durham and Dublin, hon. LL.D. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Died in Italy. Married with Jane Bury, one son.
