WHITEHEAD, Henry

WHITEHEAD, Henry. Brighton 19.12.1853 — Reading 14.4.1947. British Missionary Scholar. Sin of Rev. Alfred Wh. and Maria Sarah Buckmaster, brother of philosopher A. N. Wh. (1861–1947). Educated at Sherborne and Trinity College, Oxford. Ordained 1879, left in 1884 to India. Worked as principal of Bishop’s College in Calcutta. Bishop of Madras from 1899 to 1922. Married 1903 Isabel Duncan, son mathematician Henry Wh. (1904–1960).

Publications: The Village Gods of South India. 172 p. The Religious Life of India. 1916, 2nd ed. 1921.
