BOCARRO, Antonio

BOCARRO, Antonio. Abrante (or Lisbon?) 1594? — Goa 1643?. Portuguese Historian and Geographer. Son of New Christian parents (with Jewish background). In 1615-38 served in India, first as soldier in Goa and Cochin, finally as corretor-mor of customs in Goa, but also official historiographer in 1631-43. Married 1624 Isabel Vieira.

Publications: Livro das Plantas de todas as fortalezas, cidades e povoaçoens do Estado da Índia Oriental. Manuscript 1635 kept in Evora, printed 1-3. Lisbon 1992.

História da Índia. Decada XIII. Manuscript 1535, first publ. in Lisbon 1876 in 13+8+805 p. (continuing the work of J. de Barros and D. de Couto for 1590-1617).
