CARPENTER, James Nelson. Maffra, Victoria, Australia 1867 — Devon ?.3.1949. British Missionary in India. Son of James Henry Carpenter (1841–1918) and his wife Mary Ann. Born in Australia, but grew up in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. M.A. Went to India in 1890. Worked for Church Missionary Society in Allahabad (in 1900 as Principal of St.Paul’s Divinity School, again in Allahabad in 1906/11) and Gorakhpur (1905), but seems also to have been connected with St.John’s College, Agra. Married 1893 Edith Marion Bateman (1866–1942), three daughters and one son.
