CRANE, Robert I.

CRANE, Robert I. Delhi 1920 — Syracuse NY 1997. U.S. Historian of South Asia. Born in India to missionary parent. Studies at Duke, B.A. 1941 just before WW II. In war service again in South Asia. Renewed studies at Yale. Ph.D. 1951 Yale. Worked as Instructor at Chicago, Associate Professor at Michigan, and from 1961 Professor at Duke University in Durham, NC. From 1968 Ford-Maxwell Professor of South Asian History at Syracuse University, retired 1990. Married with Lakshmi.

Publications: Diss. The Indian National Congress and the Indian Agrarian Problem, 1919-1939. Yale 1951 (manuscript).

Wrote on modern South Asian history.
