DAVIS, Edwin Bell. Lawrence, MA 3.6.1866 — Franklin, NJ 23.7.1957. U.S. Linguist. Professor in New Brunswick, NJ. Son of Bryan Bell D. and Amelia Lockwood. Graduated from Dartmouth College (B.Litt. 1889). A.M. 1916 Rutgers. In 1889-90 teacher at a high school in New Brunswick, 1890-91 at Salt Lake City Academy, 1891-95 Instructor at New Hampshire State College. In 1894-95 further studies in Paris (É.P.H.É.) and Rome. Main career at Rutgers college (then R. University) in New Brunswick: 1895-1901 Instructor in Romance languages, 1901-04 Associate Professor, 1904-39 Professor, 1939 emeritus. Married 1892 Elizabeth Stetson Norris, one daughter and one son. As his main interests phonology, prononciation of English, Sanskrit vowels, and syntax are mentioned.
