JAMES, Arthur Lloyd

JAMES, Arthur Lloyd. Pentre, Glamorgan, Wales 21.6.1884 — Crowthorne, Berkshire 24.3.1943. British (Welsh) Phonetician. Professor in London. After school in Llanelli and Pontypridd studies of French at Cardiff, later at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduated 1910. In WW I served in Royal Engineers. From 1920 Lecturer in Phonetics at University College, London, from 1927 head of the new phonetics department at S.O.A.S. Reader 1930, Professor 1933. His main field was English and French phonetics, but he also wrote on African languages (Hausa and Yoruba) and in collaboration on Marathi and Pashto. Married the violinist Elsie Winifred, one son. Seriously depressed by the WW II he killed his wife in 1941, thinking to save her from hardships, and was sent to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, where he committed suicide.
