DUTOIT, Julius Franz Gustav. Darmstadt 13.3.1872 — Munich 17.6.1958. German Indologist (Pāli Scholar). Son of a teacher of modern languages. Matriculated from the Gymnasium of Darmstadt in 1890. In 1890-93 studied classical philology at Munich, Giessen, and again Munich (also Indology under E. Kuhn). As student became Roman Catholic. Ph.D. 1898 Erlangen. Gymnasium teacher in Würzburg 1893-94, in Dillingen 1894-95, from 1895 in Speyer, from 1902 in Munich, from 1922 in Aschaffenburg and finally Director of Riemenschneider Gymnasium in Würzburg (1929-34). Then retired and moved to Munich.
Dutoit is mainly remembered for his complete translation of the Jātaka commentary, but one is bound to ask, whether from Pāli or English. Instead of the correct ‘Banyan’ he has ‘Banane’, which could be English wrongly read, but hardly from Pāli. Or did he (or his printer) misread his own handwriting?
