LYALL, Alfred Comyn. Coulsdon, Surrey 4.1.1835 — Freshwater, Isle of Wight 11.4.1911. Sir. British Civil Servant in India. Son of Rev. Alfred Lyall (1796–1865) and Mary Drummond Broadwood, educated at Eton College, then Haileybury. Arrived at Calcutta 1856 and was sent to Bulandshahr, where he narrowly escaped death during the 1857 uprising. Served mostly in Berar and Rajputana. In 1882-87 Lieutenant-Governor of N.W. Provinces and Oudh, founded the University of Allahabad and became its first chancellor. Then back to the U.K. In 1888-92 member of India Council, then of Privy Council. K.C.I.E. 1881, G.C.I.E. 1891. Married 1862 Cornelia (Cora) Arnoldina Cloete (1836?–1913), two sons and two daughters.
