ESNOUL, Anne-Marie

ESNOUL, Anne-Marie Helène. Saint-Malo, Brittany 19.4.1908 — Saint-Malo 23.1.1996. French Indologist. Esnoul-Le Sénéchal is a noble family of Saint-Malo. Daughter of Louis E.-Le S. and Andrée Lebret.  After school in Saint-Malo and licence de philosophie in Paris, studied from 1934 Sanskrit under Masson-Oursel and Stchoupak. Diplome d’É.P.H.É. 1947, Ph.D. 196?. In 1941 she succeeded Stchoupak as the secretary-librarian of Institut de Civilisation Indienne in Paris, until 1966. Also assistant of Renou. In 1966-71 maître-assistant and in 1971-77 directeur d’études at É.P.H.É. Ve section, History of Indian Religions (succeeding Lacombe). In retirement (from 1977) lived in Paris still actively working and guiding students. Unmarried.

Esnoul was a specialist of Vaiṣṇava religion and bhakti (especially Pañcarātra) and generations of students were introduced to Sanskrit by her.
