ARVON, Henri

ARVON, Henri (né Heinz Aptekmann). Bayreuth 9.3.1914 — Antony (Haut-de-Seone) 2.12.1992. French (born German Jew) Historian. Matriculated 1933 from Bayreuth, but could no longer begin studies in Germany. He moved to France with his fiancée and began studies at Strasbourg. In 1937 to military service and obtained French citizenship. After army taught German at Clermont-Ferrand, from 1943 hiding in countryside. Agrégé 1946, then taught at Prytanée national militaire on La Flèche. In 1966-71 again at Clermont-Ferrand, then Professor in Paris X until retirement in 1982. Married 1939 Marta Weinberg (d. 1978, one daughter) and again 1978. Last years mainly spent in Spain.
