BOWERS, Faubion. Miami, Oklahoma 29.1.1917 — New York City 17.11.1999. U.S. Japanologist. Son of Powell Clayton Bowers (1890–1978) and Emma Lou Robinson. Grew up in Tulsa. Briefly studied 1935 at Columbia University and, after music studies in France, in 1939 graduated from Juilliard Graduate School of Music as concert pianist. In 1940-41 taught at Hosei University in Tokyo now turned to Japanology. During WW II interpreter in U.S. army. From 1945 General MacArthur’s Japanese interpreter in occupied Japan. Taught at New School for Social Research in New York, then as Distinguished Professor of Asian Studies at University of Kansas. Married 1951 Indian writer and dancer Shanta Rama Rao (1923–2009, divorce 1965), one son.
