CAIUS, Jean Ferdinand. Médoc 17.1.1877 — Bombay 27.7.1944. S. J. Father. French Missionary in India. School in Toulouse. Joined Madura Mission and came to India in 1895. Taught at St. Joseph’s College in Tiruchirapalli until 1905, also started a natural history museum there. Theological studies at Kurseong and at St. Beunos College in North Wales, ordained priest in Dublin 1908. Then studied at University of Paris school of medicine, returned to India in 1911. Conducted important studies on medicinal plants and animal toxins and in 1924 was appointed as pharmacologist to Haffkine Institute in Bombay. Studies on indigenous herbal drugs and on snake and scorpion venoms, collaborated with K. S. Mhaskar. Retired in 1932, but continued to teach and conduct research at St. Xavier’s College in Bombay.
