HENZI, Samuel Gottlieb Rudolf. Bern 7.9.1794 — Dorpat (Tartu) 1./13.2.1829. Swiss Oriental Scholar and Theologian in Estonia. Professor in Dorpat. Son of merchant Rudolf Jakob H. and Rosina König. Studied philosophy and theology at Bern and in 1816-17 at Tübingen (cand.theol.). Further studies in 1817-18 at Göttingen and 1818-19 in Paris (Arabic and Persian under Silvestre de Sacy, Sanskrit under Chézy). Dr.theol. 1820 Tübingen. After a visit to England in 1819 returned to Switzerland, but from 1820 Professor of Exegesis and Oriental Languages at Dorpat (Tartu). Beside exegesis taught only Hebrew and Arabic. Married 1821 Rosamunde Furer (1796–1874), four sons and two daughters.
Publications: Wrote on Arabic (Qur’ān commentaries), exegesis and, using material given by a traveller, on Hawaian language.
