HENZI, Samuel Gottlieb Rudolf

HENZI, Samuel Gottlieb Rudolf. Bern 7.9.1794 — Dorpat (Tartu) 1./13.2.1829. Swiss Oriental Scholar and Theologian in Estonia. Professor in Tartu. Son of merchant Rudolf Jakob H. and Rosina König. Studied philosophy and theology at Bern amd in 1816-17 1816-17 at Tübingen (cand.theol.). Further studies in 1817-18 in Paris (Arabic and Persian under Silvestre de Sacy, Sanskrit under Chézy). Dr.theol. 1820 Tübingen. After a visit to England, from 1820 Professor of Exegesis and Oriental Languages at Dorpat (Tartu). Beside exegesis taught only Hebrew and Arabic. Married 1821 Rosamunde Furer, two daughters.

Publications: Wrote on Arabic (Qur’ān commentaries), exegesis and, using material given by a traveller, on Hawaian language.
