HESSLER, Franz. Krombach/Bayern 15.10.1799 — 17.6.1890. German Physician and Indologist. Physician in Bavaria. Son of a farmer, educated in Würzburg. In 1822-27 studies of medicine and philology at Heidelberg and Erlangen. Ph.D. (dr. phil.) 1827. From 1828 Assistant Physician in Würzburg, 1830 Proberelation examination in Bamberg. From 1833 Court Physician in Miesbach, from 1834 in Wending. From 1862 Bezirksarzt II Classe in Geisenfeld. In 1873 retired, lived in Munich concentrating on his Āyurvedic studies. From 1852 ordinary member of Bavarian A.W.

Publications: phil. diss. De antiqua, inter Alexandrinos quae viguit, philosophiae indole. 1827.

med. diss. De antiquorum Hindorum medicina et scientiis physicis quae in Sanscritis operibus exstant. 1830.

translated: Susrutas Ayurvedas id est Medicinae systema a venerabili d’Hanvantare demonstratum, a Susruta discipulo compositum, nunc primum a sanscrita in Latinam sermonem vertit, introductionem, annotationes et rerum indicem adjecit. 1-5. Erlangae 1844-55.
