Studies of Classics at Aberdeen (1917-19 in army) and Cambridge (St.John’s College), soon also Sanskrit under E. J. Rapson and comparative linguistics under P. Giles. B.A. 1923, M.A. In 1926-30 Lecturer in Latin at Liverpool, 1930-38 Professor of Latin at Leeds. In 1938-52 Regius Professor of Humanities at Aberdeen, then 1952-68 Principal of King’s College. London, 1961-64 Vice-Chancellor of University of London. LL.D. Knighted 1967. Married 1928 Mary Stephen (d. 1983), two sons and one daughter.
