PACKARD, William Alfred. Brunswick, Maine 26.8.1830 — Princeton 2.12.1909. U.S. Classical Scholar interested in Sanskrit. Son of a minister, educated at Bowdoin (A.B. 1851, A.M. 1854), tutor at the same 1853-54. Graduated from Andover Theological Seminar in 1857. Further studies at Göttingen 1857-58. Then in 1859 Instructor of Modern Languages at Bowdoin, 1859-63 Professor of Modern Languages at Dartmouth, and 1863-70 Professor of Greek Language and Literature. From 1870 until his death Professor of Latin Language and Literature at Princeton. Married in 1861 with Susan Breese Callagher (d. 1886).
